Bridges

Humans have used bridges since prehistoric times.
The first ones were stepping stones and then fallen trees were probably used to span streams and narrow rivers. Later wooden plank walkways were constructed across marshland.

Water was often sacred to early humans, so bridges were mystical too and offerings were thrown into the water to appease the gods and water spirits, and trolls and other monsters were said to lurk beneath them ready to grab unwary passers-by!!

Then rope bridges were developed - nope not for me!!!!! 😳  And simple timber bridges.

Simple stone arch bridges were then constructed to cross wider expanses of water or chasms in rock. These could take much larger loads, especially after the Romans invented cement and constructed their impressive bridges, aqueducts, and viaducts, many of which are still standing today!!

Over the centuries, with the development of cast iron and steel, and later the suspension technology, the modern styles of the bridge we are all familiar with came into use.
And there are so many different designs out there.

Do you have any great bridges near where you live or work, or that you have seen or crossed on holiday?
Let's have some fun today sharing all manner of ways to cross from one side of something to the other, as well as our usual dose of friendly fun and chat!!
