Happy Thanksgiving
Tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day, a national holiday in the United States, and I am sure those of you who celebrate it will be pretty much organised by now with decorations and food. And it does seem like a nice celebration to have at this gloomy time of year in the run-up to Christmas.
In 1621, the Plymouth colonists from England and the Native American Wampanoag people shared an autumn harvest feast, which is considered one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations, and many dishes at that first feast were likely prepared using traditional Native American spices and cooking methods.
In 1941, President Roosevelt signed a bill making Thanksgiving the fourth Thursday in November.
Traditional, contemporary Thanksgiving foods include turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie. Volunteering is a common Thanksgiving Day activity, and communities often hold food drives and host free dinners for the less fortunate. A nice way to observe the spirit of the day.
To all those celebrating Thanksgiving Day, I hope you have a lovely day tomorrow with your nearest and dearest!
Happy Thanksgiving!
