🧁🍰Let Them Eat Cake🧁🍰

"Let them eat cake" are the most famous words ever attributed to cakes, I would imagine. This statement was made by Marie Antoinette after being told the peasants had no bread to eat during a famine in France during the reign of Louis XVI. This remark made them both very unpopular and both were beheaded during the French Revolution.

The first cakes date back to ancient times and were thought to come from Greece and Egypt, but they were nothing like the cakes we enjoy nowadays. The English dictionary traces the word cake back to the 13th Century.
During the Great Depression, cheap food had to be provided to millions of Americans who lived in poverty and the boxed cake mix was born. It was a huge success with American Wives.

Today, there are endless cakes to choose from, from plain victoria sponge to exotic black forest gateau. They can be readily bought in the shops today, or at special bakers, even online, or can be made at home, but I doubt many people have the skills to bake anything really fancy like you see on The Great British Bake Off. Cakes can be made in all sizes and small fairy cakes are what most of us were brought up on I would think and a plain Victoria sponge. Easy to make and would generally have the ingredients at hand.

Home made cakes are obviously the nicest and there is the satisfaction of saying I made that, but shop bought ones are often cheaper and more readily available than ever now.

So do you enjoy a slice of cake now and again, or are you a cake-aholic? I like a piece once in a while and will then enjoy it.

Do you buy a lot of cake, if so what sort, or do you make your own?

Let's spend today enjoying some fun with cakes, and post anything cake related, even your own recipes if you wish and pics. Along with our usual friendly fun and chit chat. And don’t forget the perfect accompaniment to your cake is some fresh cream or ice cream.
