Moons

Moons are defined as natural satellites that permanently orbit a planet or something else that is not a star.

Depending on where you live, last night or tonight, there is a full moon here on Earth: the Pink Moon, named not because it is pink in colour but because, at this time of year, many spring flowers are blooming, particularly the herb moss pink.

I have always been fascinated by the moon, ever since I was a kid. I used to enjoy tracking the phases and used the light of a full moon to find my way around at night rather than a torch in those days of far less light pollution.

And it has such great effects on our planet other than giving some light at night.
It controls the tides and formed the basis of some of our first calendars—and still does in some parts of the world, with certain celebrations decided by the moon's phases.
The word "month" comes from when humans used the lunar calendar before the switch to the solar one we are all more familiar with today. Each month back then was 28 days long.
And Monday was named in its honour!
It has also been the basis of much mythology, and under its influence, it can cause people to do strange things. Hence, the term lunatic.

There are few things more beautiful than the moon sitting in an inky blue-black sky. It has played a big part in art of all forms.
Many love our Earth's satellite just for its beauty. How dark our nights would be without that silvery light shining down!

All the other planets in our solar system have moons, too, except for Mercury and Venus.

  • Mars has 2 moons called Phobos and Deimos.

  • Jupiter has 95.

  • Saturn has a whopping 146.

  • Uranus has 28 moons.

  • Neptune has 16 moons, and the largest, Triton, dwarfs all of its brethren by accounting for 99.5% of their combined mass.

  • Pluto has 5 moons, one of which, Charon, is half its own size. They effectively orbit each other.

So on this full moon, let's take some time to celebrate all things to do with the moon, be it music, memes, gifs, or just some lovely pictures.
