Friends

What is a friend?
We all have different definitions of what we call a real friend.
Is it someone you just socialise with casually, or someone who you know you can tell a secret to and they will keep it that way?

Can you be friends with someone you have never met in person and maybe never will meet? Or someone you have never spoken to in any way apart from through the digital ink of emails and social media?

I think you can, although I have no time for the multitude of random strangers many class as Facebook friends on that platform. I believe in quality, not quantity!
But yes, many of my online friends probably know more about me than my mates in real life—the inner me! I don’t think many of my mates would understand much of that part of me. Being an INFJ and very introverted, the Internet was a gateway to finding others like me and discovering we have so much in common and often have had very similar experiences and have very similar issues in our lives.

On Disqus, I have made many good friends from many parts of the world, as well as just down the road, and have carried those friendships off Disqus, too. I am proud to call them all true friends!

I am still friends with some of my very best friends in school, and I used to have some pen friends as a kid, too. The only way to make friends back then was through physical print or by meeting face-to-face in some way.

But a good friend, whether online or offline, is worth their weight in gold!
And they don’t even have to be of the same species, either!

So, what do you call a friend? Do you have loads of friends or just a few very good ones?
Are you still friends with people from school?
Have you made good friends online and carried that friendship into real life?
Have you been a good friend to someone in need, or has someone been there for you when you hit a rough patch?
Do you have any four-legged friends? They can be some of the most understanding when you are having a difficult time!
