Well, the weather has brightened, and it's been a long winter, and you fancy a short break. Why not go camping for a week, or even a long weekend? It's a great time to enjoy the weather and the summer evenings and be outside with friends and family round a BBQ.
Camping has changed a lot since the idea first started in the 1800's when a guy named Thomas Hiram Holding first brought camping to the attention of us all. It was a big part of his life introduced to him by the rigors of the Oregon Trail and then it turned into something everybody loved and enjoyed. Once it had become popular, he introduced Cycle Camping to the American People. This was basic campingโyou got on a bike, loaded with a tent, and off you went till you found somewhere to pitch your tent and, the next day, did the same.
The first campsite opened on Douglas, Isle of Man, in 1894, and the rest, they say, is history!
It has become very popular and most people have been at some point in their lives. As a kid, I went camping with the Church in a field that had cows in it!! We had a bell tent and slept on a straw mattress we had made and a sleeping bag. There were toilets and wash tents but no shower. It was great fun, all sitting around the campfire at night.
We have been on a few camping holidays since and have enjoyed them all, but it was a basic tent, not one of these fancy things you get now or a camper van! Some of the tents nowadays are home from home, not camping to my mind. And in those days, a farmer didnโt mind if you pitched your tent in one of his empty fields either.
So, this month, let's pick up our tents and even just set them up in the garden and sleep under the stars. A fantastic way to connect with the outdoors. Or pile into your car and go and camp by a river or stream and enjoy the countryside and don't forget the BBQ!
Post all things camping-related, and tell us about your experiences with camping if you have been.
