National Wildlife Day

In September of 2006, Steve Irwin, known as “The Crocodile Hunter”, died after his heart was pierced by a sting ray. He was an expert on animals and spent much of his career helping to bring attention to endangered species and aid conservation.

In his honour, National Wildlife Day was founded, and it reminds us that the animals of the world are precious and it draws attention to the work of all of the organizations, zoos and sanctuaries that help preserve them for future generations. Once an animal has gone extinct, they’re lost forever. It’s everyone’s responsibility not to let that happen.

Steve drew attention to all manner of animals and their habitats that were under threat.

So many animals all around the world need help, what with poaching, trafficking and their habitats being destroyed by human greed.

How to celebrate National Wildlife Day

Thankfully, there are plenty of things we can all do to help support endangered animals. Almost every community has animal sanctuaries, wildlife reserves or zoos nearby, so take a trip with you, your family, or friends to help support them.
You can also see what you can do to donate time and/or money or even just spread the word about what they are doing. All publicity helps!!
And, of course, we can all do our bit to help the wildlife living in our own little part of the world: insects, birds, mammals etc. Providing food, water, and a suitable habitat helps them all.

Today, let’s celebrate the legacy of Steve Irwin and share all manner of wildlife in pictures, music, memes, or gifs, as well as our normal friendly fun and chat!!
